East Anglian Chambers Pupil Barrister Lucy Barnes announced as a finalist for the Women and Diversity in Law Awards 2025
17 January 2025
We are delighted to share that Lucy Barnes has been shortlisted as a finalist for the Women and Diversity in Law Awards 2025 as Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) Champion of the Year. Lucy has been recognised for her commitment to inclusion to her care-experienced community and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Women and Diversity in Law awards honour women leaders and practitioners as well as those making significant strides in ensuring the UK legal profession is more equal.
Lucy is CEO and Co-Founder of Lawyers Who Care, the world’s first mentoring organisation to support Care Leavers in the legal profession. Prior to starting pupillage with us in October 2024, Lucy has been instrumental in advocating for care-experienced people to be recognised and represented in the legal profession. Lucy has become a key stakeholder in Diversity and Inclusion, including leading discussions with the Bar Standards Board (BSB) and Bar Council.
Lucy was the first care-experienced person to make a positive case for inclusion for care-experienced people in the legal profession for the Bar Council, in her June 2024 article titled ‘Raising the Bar: Care-experienced people belong here.’
Lucy is even prouder that her organisation, Lawyers Who Care, has also been shortlisted as a finalist for Non-Profit Organisation of the Year.
On finding out about her award shortlist, Lucy said “As Samantha Morton said at the BAFTA’s…representation matters. I am honoured to be a finalist and represent my community in legal careers as the first openly care-experienced woman to do so.”
The winners will be decided by an esteemed judging panel and announced at an awards ceremony on the evening of Tuesday 18 March at Hilton Bankside, London.
